Definitions

Problems - "situations in which we experience uncertainty or difficulty in achieving what we want to achieve" (ITS Tutorial School, 2011).

Well-defined problem - "one for which the desired end result is clearly stated, all of the necessary information is readily available, and a particular sequence of operations will (if properly executed) lead to a correct solution" (Ormrod, 2008, p. 402).

Ill-defined problem - "one in which the goal is ambiguous, some essential information is lacking, and no guaranteed means of reaching the goal exists" (Ormrod, 2008, p. 402).

Problem schemas - knowing how to solve different problems different ways.  Used to classify a problem in ones mind (Ormrod, 2008).

  1. Problems are not always negative. They could better be described as "challenges". It depends on how a person perceives the situation at hand and the decision that has to be made. The uncertainty or difficulties can make us stronger individuals which can be a very positive outcome.

  2. I feel like a problem is a situation that requires complex thought process to solve a perceived undesired circumstance, whether rational or irrational. I think it's one of the things that defines each individual person-the ability to find solutions to things we want to change and the ability to discern what really needs to be addressed. That's what makes some people more suited as problem-solvers. The ability to see the greater picture and not get caught up in all the minutiae of life.

  3. Kimberly,

Problem solving is a critical part of life as well as a nurse's job. Everyone has to perform this skill at one time or another in their life, however not all people can master problem solving! Great blog!

  4. I believe that solving a problem depends on what type of problem it is, such as a simple "what do I do right now" or a more complex problem which may involve an emotional factor such as a family situation. I find myself coming back and forth to a complex problem as if my mind is thinking about a solution even when I am not aware of the process. One piece of advice I have learned is not to make an emotional decision at night. Things always look different in the daylight!

  5. I think that problems that we deal with in life make you who you are. Problems make you a better person. You have to go through life solving problems, whether it is simple, emotional or difficult. I think problems and problem solving make you who you are. I like the defintion of "problems" that Kimberly wrote, it does make you more successful through life by having to make decisions or problem solving.
